George Manly

2008 Inductee

George Manly was born in 1901 and raised in Hardwick, MA. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in finance and went to work for Brown & Sharpe in Providence, RI, where he spent 25 years in the financial area. He was married to Clarice Greenway for 55 years and had two children (Donald and Barbara), and six grandchildren. George was very active in his community and politics, as well as the Boy Scouts of America. After leaving Brown & Sharpe he worked for Anson Jewelry, and was the hospital administrator for the State of Rhode Island.

In the early 1960's George joined Snap-Tite, Inc. and moved here to Union City where he continued to be very active in community affairs. He was an active member of the Baptist Church, Lion's Club, Hospital Board of Directors, Union City Area Planning Commission, and worked extremely hard for the Community Housing Association here in Union City. George was also district representative for the Boy Scouts and was crucial in aiding in the expansion of the Union City Hospital. George was honored by eight different Union City organizations for his outstanding civic services. Sadly, George Manly passed away in September of 1987. However, his legacy of civic responsibility stills lives on today in the lives of those who knew him best.

The Manly Heights Senior apartments near the hospital bears his name in honor of his contributions. We take this opportunity to honor George Manly once again for his contribution to the Union City community and welcome him to the Wall of Achievement.
