Ben Shreve

2020/2021 Inductee

Ben Shreve was a graduate of Union City Area High School in 1997. He was a three sport athlete, which is a rarity. Shreve’s high school sports accomplishments came at one of the high points in Union City sports history. A remarkable four-year starter in baseball and football, and a two year starter in basketball. His teams won The French Creek Valley Conference championship in baseball his junior year, and in basketball his junior and senior years.

The basketball team went an unprecedented 47-1 in Ben’s junior and senior year. They never lost a game in Union City’s new gymnasium. He was named Honorable Mention All-Conference in his senior year.

A four-year starter in baseball, Ben anchored the second base position while the Bears took the French Creek Valley Championship in his junior year. He was named the second team French Creek Valley Conference designated hitter in his sophomore season, and first team French Creek Valley Conference second baseman in both his junior and senior years.

Ben also excelled in his performance for four years on the football field. He punted and kicked field goals, extra points and kickoffs for Union City, while also playing multiple positions on offense and defense. He is still the record holder of the school for extra points made in a game. He was named French Creek Valley first team kicker in his sophomore, junior and senior years. His talent on the football field led him to receive a scholarship to play football at Grove City College.

While most high school athletes specialized in one or perhaps two sports, Ben represented Union City in 12 sports seasons between 9th and 12th grades. He was voted by his classmates as “Most Athletic” in his senior year. He was also named the Knights of Columbus “Athlete of the Year”, in a three way tie with two other prolific Union City Athletes -Ashley Orris and Greg Cooper. He was also a member of the Student Council and became Vice President in his senior year.

Ben went on to become the punter and kicker for Grove City College from 1997 through 2001. There he was named to the Presidents Athletic Conference All-Conference team for four straight years - twice as the second team All-Conference punter, and twice as the first team punter. His team at Grove City won the PAC Championship during two of the years that Ben played. His personal best of a 45-yard field goal and a 68-yard punt are among the schools longest. He continues to hold the single-game extra point record at Grove City College, and upon graduation held the college’s record for career punting yardage average. Today, nearly 20 years after graduating, Ben is still second in school history in career field goals and career extra points, third in career punts, and fourth in career punting average.

Ben’s Union City roots prepared him for more than sports. He has been working for the past 20 years in Maryland and Delaware for the largest home builder in the United States, DR Horton. He has steadily worked his way from Assistant Supervisor to Supervisor, Project Manager, and now as Area Construction Manager.

Ben has garnered several awards through the years, including multiple customer service awards. He also was awarded “Homebuilding MVP, “Construction and Sales Team of the Year” and the “Above and Beyond Award” presented by the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board at the annual meeting.

Currently, Ben is an Area Construction Manager for DR Horton, overseeing five construction managers, that at any given time have between $10 million and $40 million in home value under construction.

Ben is the son of Jim and Linde Shreve of Union City. He is a resident of Clarksville, Maryland. He and his wife Amberly, have 2 daughters, Brooke, 9 and Quinn, 7. He is very active in his community. He is a member of the Lighthouse Church. He and his family volunteer each Saturday through the church’s “Be Kind” outreach program to provide hot meals and essentials to the homeless.
