Dr. Frank Musiek

Dr. Frank Musiek is a 1964 graduate of Union City High School. While at Union City Dr. Musiek was selected to the 1st team All Erie County football team as a halfback and played in the Save an Eye All Star Game. He also set the school record in the 100 yard dash of 10.1 seconds, a record that has not been broken. In 1968 Dr. Musiek graduated from Edinboro College where he played football and ran track. Dr. Musiek then furthered his studies in Ohio, receiving his Master’s Degree in Audiology at Kent St University before going on to complete his PH.D. with a focus on Audiology and Neurophysiology at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Musiek began his professional career as Director of Audiology at the prestigious Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire and in 1987 was appointed Professor of Neurology and Audiology at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Musiek taught, practiced, and researched there for 25 years before becoming a professor and director of auditory research at the University of Connecticut in 2001. During his career Dr. Musiek has become a leading scientist in the field of Audiology. His research has provided valuable insight into the nature and function of the human auditory system. Dr. Musiek has published over 160 refereed articles, presented more than 275 invited lectures and seminars, and nearly 350 scientific papers at national and international conferences, research symposia and other venues around the world. He has developed four clinical audiological tests, three of which are mainstays of the clinical central auditory test battery used world wide. He has published nine books and authored no fewer than 43 book chapters. His keen research and insight into the areas of central auditory processing and dysfunction, neuroanatomy and physiology of the auditory system and hearing assessment and diagnosis have earned him a national and international reputation as an authority on the human auditory system and hearing disorders.
In 2007, Dr. Musiek’s research earned him the James Jerger Career Award for Research in Audiology, the nation’s top audiological research award given by the American Academy of Audiology. In 2010 he received Honors of the American Speech and Hearing Association – the association highest award for his research in auditory neuroscience and audiology. Dr. Musiek also received Distinguished Alumni Awards from Case Western Reserve University in 1990 and Edinboro University in 1995. Dr. Musiek’s proudest achievement however, is his family, his wonderful wife Sheila, sons Erik and Justin, daughter in-law Amy and grand daughters Emma, Anna Kate and Ella. In the fall of 2014 Dr. Musiek will assume Professorships at the University of Arizona in the Department of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences and School of Medicine.
