William Malec
2010 Inductee
William Malec is a 1968 graduate of Union City High School. After graduation William enlisted in the United States Air Force and began a career of serving the United States that has lasted for the past forty-two years.
During his time in the Air Force Colonel Malec has earned a Bachelor f Arts degree in psychology from Florida International University and a Master of Science degree in guidance and counseling from Barry University. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College. In 1980 Colonel Malec separated as a technical sergeant in order to pursue a commission as an Air Force Officer. He was then commissioned as a distinguished graduate through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Miami in 1982. Throughout his Air Force career Colonel Malec has served in various base level and staff positions in Tactical Air Command, Air Training Command, Pacific Air Forces, Air Force Communications Command, United States Air Force Europe, Air Combat Command, Air Force Materiel Command, Air Education and Training Command, Air Force Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Battlelab, and Air Force Flight Standards Agency. Throughout his career, Colonel Malec has had twenty different assignments of service. Currently Colonel Malec is Chief, Airspace and Airfield Operations Division, Headquarters Air Mobility Command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He is responsible for air traffic control, air field management and suitability, airspace management, and terminal instrument procedures at thirteen Air Mobility Command bases in the continental United States which directly supports Air Mobility Command’s mission providing airlift, air refueling, special air mission, and aeromedical evacuation for US forces around the world.
Colonel Malec has also earned the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, and the Colorado Air National Guard Meritorious Service Medal. Colonel Malec is currently stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Ill and is planning on retiring this month from the Air Force after forty-two years of dedicated service.
