Dan Brumagin

2019 Inductee

Dan Brumagin is a 1981 graduate of Union City High School. He has been employed with the Union City Municipal Authority since he was 16 years old. While he was in high school, he worked part time and weekends. Dan was hired full time in 1982. During his first year of full time employment, he obtained both his water and waste-water systems treatment operator’s certificates.

Starting in 1983, he became the chief water plant operator. Dan currently holds the position of Municipal Authority Operational Manager. In 2001, Dan led a multi-million dollar project to upgrade Union City’s filtering technology at the water plant and aeration operations at the reservoir. These upgrades keep Union City’s drinking water within federal safety standards and is considered one of the best filtration systems in the state. Dan was also instrumental in securing the new building on Main Street from Northwest Bank. He then oversaw the addition to the new Municipal Building so they could house the Authority’s trucks and equipment all in one place.

Dan was named Small Water Systems Operator of the year in 1999 from the Rural Water Association Conference, which was held at State College, PA. He was recognized for resourcefulness, perseverance and devotion to rural water in the state. Dan has taught courses for the Department of Environment and Protection (DEP) as a small system technical outreach trainer. He also taught courses for the Department of Conservation and Economic Development (DCED) regarding water treatment plant operations.

Dan is always looking to further his knowledge and education through traditional education or self-initiated research. His continuing education since high school has been with Penn State, DEP, DCED, Corry Higher Education, and multiple technical schools. The courses he has taken include engineering, water, and waste-water treatment and management, leader, accounting, industrial wiring and plumbing, and auto mechanics. Dan’s philosophy has always been "You never quit learning new things no matter how old you are." Dan has been an elected official of the Union City Borough Council Board for the past 22 years and served as President for 18 of those years. While on Council, he served on the Sidewalk Committee, Zoning Board, and is currently serving on the Manly Heights Board. While on Council and working for the Municipal Authority, Dan has secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants for the community. Dan is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Union City and in the past has served as chairman of the trustee board and finance board. He has also held the Chairman of Life Insurance and President of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Erie County. Dan is currently the oldest person living with Cystic Fibrosis in the Tri-State area and is one of the oldest persons who carries this disease still working full time in this country. He will say serving the Union City Community is what keeps him going. He works 24/7 for the community he lives in and the Municipal Authority he manages. Dan has many recognized accomplishments through his years of service to “our community”.
