Marsh Young

2009 Inductee

Marsh Young was born in Union City in 1928 and is a 1946 graduate of Union City High School. After graduation Marsh attended Grove City College for a year and a half before enlisting in the Naval Air Force in 1948. Marsh was then sent to the Naval Air Technical Center in Memphis, TN where he completed a course as a navy hydraulic engineer. Marsh served in the Navy until 1952. After returning to Union City in 1952 Marsh went into business with his father operating a hardware and sporting goods business. Marsh then married his wife, Ellen Sutter, in 1952. The couple has two children Richard and Alan.

Marsh has been very active in the Union City community. He coached Little League baseball for several years, taught as a Sunday School teacher, and helped begin a youth fishing program for French Creek in 1967. Marsh wrote an outdoor column for the Union City Enterprise from 1969-1973. Marsh was also a founding member of a local chapter of "Trout Unlimited" in Northwest Pennsylvania in 1976. In September of 1976, Marsh caught a 25 pound Chinook Salmon while fly fishing in 20 Mile Creek. To this present date, the fish is still the largest fish ever caught on a fly rod and fly in the state of Pennsylvania. Marsh has volunteered on several occasions to teach the art of fly fishing throughout many communities in Pennsylvania and has given personal instruction to dozens of individuals.

Marsh was named Union City's Outstanding Citizen in 1984 by the Union City Lions Club. He served as a member of the Union City Public Library and past member of the Civil Service Commission. In recent years, Marsh has volunteered his time to help teach Union City Middle School students interested in fly fishing, fly tying, and angling. For several years Marsh also assisted and supervised in stocking trout in French Creek throughout Union City. Marsh also helped start a "fishing day" in Union City for boys and girls under the age of 16 and has served on The Gathering at French Creek Committee since it began a few years ago.

Marsh also has been a supportive fan of Union City athletics for the past several years. He helped sponsor the local basketball industrial tournament for several years. Marsh has always served his family, church, and community with pride and joyful dedication and if you look carefully, you'll be sure to see him out along the streams angling for his next big catch.
