Herbert Combs

2008 inductee

Mr. Herbert Combs was born and raised in Union City and was a member of the class of 1944. While in school he was a member of the band, student council, dramatics club, and both the basketball and football teams. Upon graduation Herb joined the U.S. Army and he is a veteran both WW II and the Korean War.

Many of you recognize Herb from the post office where he was Head Post Master for 40 years. However, Herb is probably best known for his volunteer work in the Union City school and community. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, U.C. Fire Department, and the Knights of Columbus. He served as President of the PTA from 1968-1969, a member of the “Paint Your Heart Out Union City’ providing free house painting to low income families, he has given several awards to Union City students on behalf of the Lion’s Club, he was a member of the recreation commission and initiated a special “Parks and Recreations Week”, he has served as secretary/treasurer of the U.C. Elderly & Handicapped Association, he served on the board of the Historical Society, he has been an active member of the Alumni Association, he has been a member of the Union City Community Housing Association which has provided several grants and organized many projects within the community to help those in need, and was named “Citizen of the Year” in 1969. Herb has been honored by several organizations for his hard work including the Lion’s Club, the Veteran’s of Foreign War, and the Union City Senior Center. He’s also spoke to students here at the Union City School District about the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. Herb also honored outstanding athletes at the past Athletic Awards dinner held at Union City on behalf of the Lion’s Club.

Herb has been a tireless volunteer and devoted citizen to the Union City community. He has always worked hard to make this community a better place to live and has generously given his time and efforts to help build a better future for our children. We thank you Herb for your time, devotion, and love to our community and warmly welcome you to the Wall of Achievement.
