James Swanson

2012 Inductee

James N. Swanson was born and raised in Kane, PA. During his senior year in high school he was drafted to serve in the United States Military during World War II. He received his college degree in Education from Lock Haven Teachers College and accepted his first teaching position at Randolph East-Mead High School in Guys Mills, PA.

In 1958 Jim moved to Union City and began teaching and coaching for the Union City Area School District. During his teaching career at Union City Jim taught Health and Physical Education. He was also involved in many extra-curricular activities within the school district. He served as an advisor for several classes including field trips to New York City and Washington, D.C. He also served as the advisor to the boys varsity club (U-Clan). Jim also was the Head Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach for several years during his career at Union City. Jim created and directed annual dance and gymnastic shows for the Union City Community for several years. He helped coordinate and direct the Summer Recreation Program to keep kids active and involved during the summer school break. Finally, Jim served as Athletic Director for several years before his retirement from Union City in 1985. In honor of his time and dedication to the students at Union City, the Union City Bears Club award the James Swanson Memorial Scholarship to a Senior that is continuing their education after their time here at Union City.

James Swanson had a passion to teach and coach and willingly gave his time and support to the Union City School District and community during his 27 years teaching and several years after his retirement. He was a gifted athlete and gymnast that always tried to pass along his knowledge and love for athletics on to the students he worked with each and every day. Jim touched the lives of many students while teaching at Union City and helped develop boys into young men through his dedication and tutelage.
